We are officially hit December, and it’s nearly halfway through the Premier League Season. Before we get into any specifics, lets take a quick look at the standings.
As we get deeper into the season the league title race seems to be a one horse race. Manchester City have been absolutely dominant throughout the first half. A whole 11 points clear at the top. Second year City Manager Pep Guardiola has turned them into a dominant force. They are scoring a whole shit load of goals, and not even coming close to losing. So far in Manchester City are undefeated in the Premier League. Their only non-win was a draw against Everton in August. This past Sunday Pep’s Citizens beat rivals Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford. The game wasn’t as close as the score line reflected either. United’s goal scoring has gone quiet. Right now I can’t see anyone else catching up , or passing City in the standings. After a tough 2016-17 campaign, Guardiola has rejuvenated the City Squad. If you’re looking to get into the premier league, I recommend watching a Manchester City game first. They’ve got a whole boatload of talent on their side. Sergio Auguero leads the attack along with, Kevin De Bruynne, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, and 19 year old Gabriel Jesus.
In second, we have City’s crosstown rivals, Manchester United. Like their little brother, United are in their second season with a new manager. Jose Mourinho is heading his second campaign at Old Trafford, after a disappointing end to the 2016-17 campaign. United came out of the gate on fire. Winning 5 of their first 6 matches in the league. Lately, their form has slipped, losing to Chelsea and Huddersfield in league play. These losses helped Manchester City secure a stronghold on the title race. United newcomer Romelu Lukaku had started off hot. Rom came out of the gate smashing goals for his new club. Lukaku once smashed home goals for Everton Football Club. He’s currently 6th in the league in goals scored with 8. Lukaku and his pal Paul Pogba will have to step it up in the second half of the season if they wish to top City someway.
Sitting in third we have London’s Chelsea F.C. The defending champs are backing up their 2016-17 title campaign admirably. Manchester City have been surging, but defending champs are still hanging around. The Blues beat Huddersfield 3-1 today to secure another 3 points in the standings. For now, they would leapfrog Manchester United in the standings. New goal scorer, Alvaro Morata is currently tied for third in the Premier League with 9 goals. Morata has not disappointed since his arrival from Real Madrid this summer. Other usual suspects such as, N’golo Kante, Eden Hazard, and Willian have all been at the top of their game. Hazard missed portions of the season with a lingering summer injury, but when in the lineup he is lethal. There is turmoil regarding manager Antonio Conte. It is sounding more, and more like he will be fired by seasons end. That’s how it goes in soccer. If you can’t win in a week, than you’re fired. Not expecting Chelsea to challenge City for the title, but they can definitely push to secure second place, and a 2018-19 Champions League birth.
Finally, in fourth we have…………Burnley. Can’t tell you much about Burnley, as they are one of the smaller clubs in England. Sitting in 4th place in the premier league, and they managed to win their match with Stoke City today. Incredible. Manager Sean Dyche is frequently mentioned as a candidate to be hired at larger clubs. They are obviously well coached by the man. Now, it is going to be a challenge to stay in 4th for Burnley. I wouldn’t say they are much of a threat to finish in the top 4, but it is certainly a possibility if they keep their run of form. I would think finish anywhere from 7-4 is a real possibility.
Other News and Notes from Around the EPL:
1. The Premier League top Goal Scorer is Mo Salah with Liverpool (yuck). Salah has 12 league goals so far.
2. My favorite club, Everton have struggled mightily in the new campaign. Currently, they sit in 10th Place, but had a short stint in the bottom 3. They fired Manager Ronald Koeman, and hired Sam Allardyce. Everton have slowly changed the tune of their season slightly. Wayne Rooney is proving that he still has what it takes. He has 8 league goals. Tied with Romelu Lukaku of Manchester United.
- If the season ended today Swansea, West Ham, and West Bromwich Albion would be relegated out of the Premier League. West Ham comes at a surprise, as they spent over £100 million pounds in the summer to bring in new talent. They fired manager Slaven Bilic, and hired ex Everton and Manchester United skipper, David Moyes. West Bromwich have also fired their manager Tony Pulis and hired Alan Pardew as Interim.
With a few months left to go in the season, there are bound to be plenty of changes to the standings. Hopefully the title race turns into more of a fight. Premier league fans should be excited for the upcoming month and a half. The schedule is packed with games before the new year.
Up the Toffee’s!!
